I AM Christina Uss, BIKE WRITER: Since 1999, I've written for many magazines and newspapers about bicycling. While my first novel is fiction, it's filled with real stuff about riding across the country and meeting the most amazing people and seeing the most amazing sights. How did I learn all of this real stuff? Because...
I AM ALSO Christina Uss, BIKE RIDER: I've ridden across the country myself twice: The Long Way (Washington, DC to San Francisco CA) and The Short Way (Vancouver, Canada to the Mexico border). Someday when we meet I'll tell you why The Short Way was more fun. I've also taken worked as an adventure tour guide, taking families on bike tours all over the country, eating lobsters in Maine, photographing bears in Montana, seeing orcas in Washington State.
THERE IS NOTHING LIKE BICYCLING TO LEARN ABOUT THE KINDNESS OF STRANGERS. Our country is filled with small towns, and those small towns are filled with Nice. I hope you get to learn that yourself someday.
THE ADVENTURE CYCLING ASSOCIATION is the best place to start if you want to have a long-distance bike adventure of your own. This nonprofit organization inspires and empowers people to travel by bicycle.

- They provide maps to everywhere.
- They offer tours for families to adventure together.
- Their Adventure Cyclist Magazine is filled with great stories, including one about a twelve-year-old kid who biked across the country. (For reals! He did it once The Short Way, and then The Long Way!) They have stories about moms and kids biking, dads and kids biking, teachers and kids biking, and kids and friends biking.
So if you dream about dipping your front wheel in a distant ocean, or biking up a mountain on a different continent, or riding to your favorite ice cream shop all on your own, dream big, because
